Definitions of terms
Acetate
A salt or ester of acetic acid. A synthetic fabric or yarn derived from the acetic ester of
cellulose .
In record collecting:
Acetates, also known as masters or reference discs, are usually black and 7" to 12" in
diameter. While most records are made of vinyl ,
acetates are made out of aluminum coated with cellulose acetate.
Thus, while they look like records , they weigh approximately five times as much.

Album
Any book for keeping autographs , photographs ,
stamps , etc. in. [Latin=a blank tablet]
(coloq.) Records : see LP .
anthology
A book that is composed of selections by more than one author.

autograph
Something written in a person's own handwriting, esp. his signature.

bb or BB
bb sized hole in cover of record . Usually denotes a cut-out
or a promotional record .

boot
See bootleg.
bootleg
illicit. Originally from Prohibition era - in. re. illegal alcoholic liquor.
In record collecting:
An illicit recording made without the Artist's or recording
company's knowledge and/or permission.
CAV
Constant Angular Velocity. Standard play format for laser discs .
CD3
A 3" compact disc .
CD5
A 5" compact disc .
CDV
A 5" compact disc video.
Celluloid
A highly inflammable, colorless solid made from cellulose nitrate and camphor.
It is used in the manufacture of film, packaging materials, etc.
cellulose
A fibrous carbohydrate having the formula (C6 H10 O5 )n .
It is the principal structural material of the cell walls of plants and is chiefly obtained from wood pulp
and cotton. It is used in making paper, rayon, many plastics and some explosives.
CLV
Constant Linear Velocity. Extended play format for laser discs .
COH
Cut-Out Hole. A hole punched in the cover of a record .
Usually denotes a cut-out or a
promotional record .

collection
Things brought together by choice. The act of collecting.
A recording or book that is composed of selections by more than one artist or author.

Compact Disc (CD)
Compact Disc. An impact resistant, transparent, polycarbonate plastic disc with a highly reflective
vaporized aluminum surface using a digitally quided laser beam.
cut corner (CC)
A cut corner on the cover of a record . Usually denotes a cut-out or a
promotional record .

cut-out (CO)
Usually a record, but may also be a CD or a book.
An item that has been "cut-out" of the manufacturers catalogue and marked in some manner to be sold
at a discount.
deltiology
digipak
A packaging format for compact discs.
A jewel-box -sized cardboard package with a plastic tray to secure the disc.
Developed by AGI in 1985.
digitrak
A packaging format for compact discs.
Essentially identical to the digipak , except that it is sold in the open position
stiffened by two plastic rails with a few extra cardboard panels for added graphics.
Original release in 1991 by A&M (Sting - "Soul Cages ").
DJ copy (DJ designate)
Promotional copy of an LP (and sometimes CD )
that designated promotional copy on cover.
DVD
Digital Versatile Disc (or Digital Video Disc) -
a disc that resembles a CD in appearance but contains much more storage capacity.
EP
Extended Play. Usually a 7" record in either a
45 RPM or 33 RPM
speed.
F
Fair.

Refers to the speed of rotation of a record in Rotations Per Minute (RPM) .
Usually refers to a 7-inch vinyl single .
G
Good.

Import.
inner sleeve
The inner, protective paper sleeve of a record .
jewel box
A packaging format for compact discs.
laser

long box
A packaging format for compact discs.

LP ( Record Album)
12" Long Play vinyl record album.
m or M
Mono. Monaural recording .
Mint. Condition grade.

nap
Not Affecting Play.
NM
Near Mint.

oc
Original Cast. Original recording of Broadway or similar play.

ost
Original Sound Track. Recording of the original sound track of a movie.

P
Poor.

pc
Picture Cover. The cover of a CD or a 12" single
that has a picture.
philately
photograph(s)
A reproduction, usually on photographic paper, made by photography.

pi
Picture Insert. An insert in a CD single that has a picture.
picture sleeve (PS)
A sleeve for a 45 RPM single that has a picture
on it.
plug-side
The side of a record that the recording company has chosen to be featured by
radio station air-play.

promo or promotional
An item that is marked in some way and intended to be given free to promote the sale of the
stock copies of the item.
Usually a record or a CD , but may also be a t-shirt, match book,
post card, etc.
Q or quad
Quadrophonic recording. A recording with 4 discrete channels of sound.
re
Reissue. A re-issued or reprinted item. Not the original print or pressing.
real-photo

record
Refers here to music recordings, usually on grooved vinyl discs (platters).

ring wear (RW)
Wear on the cover of a record from the center ring around the label or from the
outer edge of the record .
RPM
Revolutions Per Minute.
A measure of the (rotational) speed of a vinyl record :

sampler
A recording or book that is composed of selections by more than one artist or author and is intended to
be given away free as a promotional item.

seam-split (sm spl)
A split on the seam or edge of the record cover or sleeve.
7"
standard 45 RPM single .
shrink wrap
The outer, heat-shrunk or sealed plastic cover of any item offered for sale.
In records , the brittle, transparent plastic wrapping around the jacket.
single
A record or compact disc that contains one or more songs, but not a complete
LP or album .
In records , either a 45 RPM or a
33 RPM , in either a 7" or a
12" format.
In compact discs , either a 3-inch (CD3) or a
5-inch (CD5) format.

Sticker(s) On Cover.
SOL
Sticker(s) On Label.

Slight Ring wear .

Still Sealed.

Self-titled. A recording that has the same name as the artist.
ST
Original Sound Track. Recording of the original sound track of a movie.

stamps
stereo or stereophonic.
Stereophonic recording. A recording with 2 discrete channels of sound.
stock copy
A copy of a record , CD , book, etc. that is intended for
sale by a retailer.
studio cast
Recording of cast assembled in the recording studio to replicate a stage recording.

styrene
Liquid hydrocarbon C6 H5 CH=CH2 obtained esp. from ethylbenzene
and serving as the raw material for many plastics.
tc
Title Cover. The cover of a CD or a 12" single
that has a worded title.
10"
10-inch vinyl LP .
ti
Title Insert. An insert in a CD single that has a worded title.

Refers to the speed of rotation of a record in Rotations Per Minute
(RPM) .
Actual rotational speed is 33 1/3 RPM .

Various Artists. A recording that is composed of selections by more than one artist.

Very Good.

vinyl
WLP - White Label Promo
Promotional pressing of an LP
(and sometimes CD ) that has a white label
and is designated promotional copy on label.
Usually limited pressing runs and higher quality vinyl than
stock copies.
WOC
Writing On Cover
WOL
Writing On Label
XOL
An "X" written On Label of a record . Usually intended to indicate the
"plug-side" of a promotional copy.
